At the COP29 climate conference in Baku, countries must show ambition in their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Secretary-General Celeste Saulo told Report.
“We need the whole world to play its part here. This is not just about the Global North or Global South, it’s a collective effort. Therefore, we need every country to participate in the fight against climate change. We hope that an agreement will be reached on the core financing that the developing world needs to ensure a truly fair energy transition,” she said.
The WMO secretary-general also expressed optimism about achieving the goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C: “I would say that we all need to be optimistic [about this], because we won’t like living in a world where this threshold is exceeded.”
