Iraq is implementing plans to develop its gas resources, gradually stop flaring associated gas, and aims to abandon expensive imports from neighboring Iran, country’s Oil Minister Hayan Abdel Ghani said.
Report informs via Iraqi media that Iraq may stop importing natural gas from neighboring Iran after completing projects to develop the country’s unused gas resources, according to the minister.
“Iraq is importing gas from our Iranian neighbours, and such supplies are costing the state huge sums of money,” the minister said.
“Besides, such supplies are not stable and would not continue all the time owing to the circumstances in Iran, which has sometimes reduced supplies or stopped them. This cannot continue forever, because it is affecting electricity generation in Iraq.”
Gas production in Iraq is expected to increase by almost 190 million cubic feet per day in 2025.
