Syria’s new authorities have requested Türkiye’s help in equipping southern regions to protect the area bordering Israel in the Golan Heights region, the Türkiye newspaper wrote, Report informs via TASS.

Syrian sources said that the transitional administration of Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa voiced their requests to Türkiye regarding border security and army restructuring.

Damascus primarily needs Turkish drones, radar systems, electronic warfare systems, and air defense along the borders, especially, as the newspaper notes, to ensure control of the corridor bordering Israel, namely the Golan Heights area. A Syrian source notes that “the first delivery of UAVs will take place in the near future.”

It is noted that cooperation between Ankara and Damascus in this area were discussed in detail during recent visits by Turkish Defense Ministry representatives to Syria. Technical details were discussed, as well as where and how Turkish weapons and systems would be used. Syria’s new authorities stated they chose Türkiye for defense cooperation.

The newspaper’s Arab sources also said that Türkiye will train the Syrian army, with plans to establish two Turkish military bases in Syria. A corresponding agreement is being developed and is planned to be signed “in the near future.” This document, according to sources, will also establish provisions for Turkish assistance in case Syria faces threats. Additionally, the agreement will reportedly include training Syrian Air Force pilots, with plans to “deploy 50 F-16 fighters at two Turkish bases until Syrian Air Force is formed.”
