The visit of President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen is a climax in relations between the EU and Azerbaijan, Head of the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan Peter Michalko said in an interview with Report.

He noted that this visit is another opportunity to emphasize the importance of relations between the parties and determine the prospects for further cooperation.

“It is also important that in her statement the President of the EC stressed that Azerbaijan is considered by the EU as a reliable partner in the field of energy – the supply of energy resources and for energy security,” he said.

He noted that in the context of Russian aggression and war against Ukraine, absolutely unprovoked and unjustified, the EU decided to refuse to supply energy resources from Russia. “Obviously, we are interested in cooperation with our partners. From the point of view of energy supplies and ensuring energy security, Azerbaijan is considered as a reliable partner, which is based on our long-term cooperation,” Michalko said.

The head of the EU delegation added that the signed memorandum on energy cooperation is a continuation of the previously signed ones – in 2006, and then in 2011, when “we were already concentrating on the construction of the Southern Gas Corridor. “Today, the Southern Gas Corridor is a reality, it connects us, this is an excellent project and a great example of our cooperation and partnership,” the diplomat said.

Another important issue in the field of energy, as Michalko emphasized, is the prospect of developing renewable energy sources.
