The Commission on National Economy, Agrarian, Regional Policy and Environment of the Latvian Saeima (Parliament) supported amendments to the tourism bill prohibiting the country’s operators from organizing tours to Russia and Belarus, Report informs via LSM.
Deputy Janis Patmalnieks from the New Unity party, who initiated the amendments, claims that they are needed to reduce the risks of possible “human rights violations” against Latvian citizens traveling to Russia and Belarus. He also believes that the travel ban can prevent the recruitment of Latvians by Russian and Belarusian special services.
A representative of the Latvian Ministry of Economy also admitted the possibility of further restrictions for the country’s passenger carriers operating on Russian and Belarusian routes.
