The trade war between the US and China could have both positive and negative impacts on the transit of goods through Kazakhstan, said Akimjan Arupov, Director of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations, Report informs.
A new phase of trade war between the two countries is escalating after China’s retaliatory introduction of taxes on a number of goods imported from the US, and the launch of an antitrust investigation against Google following Washington’s implementation of 10 percent tariffs on all Chinese goods.
“Firstly, China will try to redirect part of its export flows to other directions. For example, Russia immediately redirected its oil flows to China and India after sanctions were imposed against it. Now China and India are hurriedly turning to other markets amid a trade war with the US,” Arupov said.
According to him, secondly, the new phase of tariff confrontation between the US and China could lead to an increase in transit cargo flow through Kazakhstan not by 5, but by 50 times.
