It will take Italy at least another two years to completely ditch Russian gas supplies, the Italian energy company Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi said, Report informs via La Stampa.

“At the moment, the replacement of Russian gas is partial, it will take two years to replace it completely,” – said the Eni CEO. “The work has not been completed yet, because we have replaced 30 billion cubic meters (out of almost 40 billion cubic meters – ed.). This is not so simple, because in the last eight years, domestic production has not been stimulated, we have lost the gas that we produced in Italy, and investments in the gas sector were not promoted,” he noted.

Claudio Descalzi explained that the rapid replacement of Russian gas was made possible thanks to Italy’s historical ties with countries such as Egypt, Angola, Algeria, the Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, and Libya, where the company maintained its presence, “producing 70% for the local market.” “We took certain risks, but at the moment when the need for gas arose, we were able to quickly increase exports,” Descalzi added.
