“The French government is blocking our participation in democratic elections because we can gain independence through elections,” the coordinator for external affairs of the trade union of exploited and Kanak workers, Rok Khaokas, told the US bureau of Report.

According to a human rights activist, France is inciting unrest in New Caledonia.

“The French authorities have arrested political activists. We do not know what their future fate will be. The intentions of New Caledonia, in particular the Kanaks, the main ethnic group, to achieve independence are under pressure,” said Khaokas.

He noted that early parliamentary elections will be held in France on June 30, and political tension in the country has reached a record high.
