The Mayor of Grenoble and eco-activist Eric Piolle called on French President Emmanuel Macron to organize a referendum on cannabis decriminalization, Report informs via French media.
Piolle accused the current Interior Minister and his predecessors of being content with superficial efforts in fighting drug trafficking.
“If cannabis is removed, 50% of turnover will disappear,” Piolle stated. According to him, no organization, including mafia structures, could survive such a reduction in revenue.
He also proposed that Macron take the initiative and hold a referendum on this issue: “This will allow us to address the problem directly rather than avoiding it.”
Piolle also criticized successive Interior Ministers for refusing to discuss decriminalization. He stated that they had effectively turned the fight against drug trafficking into “their business,” limiting themselves to loud statements and actions without long-term effects.
