The renowned German dictionary Duden has unveiled a list of the longest words in the German language. Topping the list is a staggering 67-letter word, Report informs via TASS.
The word in question is Grundst cksverkehrsgenehmigungszust ndigkeits bertragungsver ordnung, which translates to “rule on the transfer of jurisdiction for approval of real estate transactions.” This word surpasses the longest word in the orthographic dictionary by an impressive 23 letters.
Sharing the second and third spots are two words, each consisting of 58 letters. One is the Welsh toponym Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, and the other is Stra enentw sserungsinvestitionskostenschuldendienstumlage, meaning “apportionment of debt service for road drainage investment costs.”
Following closely is the 56-letter word Kurzfristenergieversorgungssicherungsma nahmenverordnung, which translates to “rule on short-term measures to ensure security of energy supply.”
The longest words in the Duden dictionary primarily originate from legal and bureaucratic language and are compound words. The ranking only includes words that have been used in the last 10 years and appear in media at least 5 times.
