Gas reserves in underground gas storage (UGS) facilities in Europe have fallen below 50%, and the rate of gas withdrawal in February is nearing a record high, according to data from Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE), Report informs via TASS.

Since the beginning of the heating season, the EU has already withdrawn more than half of the accumulated winter fuel reserves, totaling 53.2 billion cubic meters.

The last season of gas withdrawal from European underground storage facilities ended on March 31, 2024, with 58.44% of reserves still in place, marking a record figure for the period of observation.

Currently, European UGS facilities are 49.99% full, which is 8.18% lower than the five-year average for this date. This level is not only lower than at the end of the last fall/winter period but also below the levels recorded at the end of the heating seasons in 2019-2020 and 2022-2023.
