Erdogan Conditions Zangazur Corridor Opening on Peace Treaty Between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has made it clear that the opening of the Zangazur Corridor is a key condition for a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Speaking to journalists after participating in the North Atlantic Alliance summit in Washington from July 9-11, Erdogan reiterated Turkey’s support for the peace process and outlined the steps required to achieve it.
“Why not consider the issue of opening this border?” Erdogan asked. “Previously, we told Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan everything about this. Now we need to do everything for peace. We hope that soon lasting peace will be achieved between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which Turkey wholeheartedly supports. The opening of the Zangazur Corridor is the final step to complete the peace agreement.”
Erdogan emphasized the urgency of making positive decisions without delay. “We want positive decisions along this path to be made without delay. There are now positive signals coming from the region, and we hope that they will ultimately bring good news,” he noted.
The Turkish leader also highlighted that he had not discussed the Zangazur Corridor issue with Iran’s newly elected President, Masoud Pezeshkian. “I only congratulated him on his election victory. The Zangazur Corridor is a strategic route that will benefit everyone, especially Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Iran. Iran and Azerbaijan will find it easier when the corridor and the railway line become operational,” Erdogan added.
Erdogan’s remarks underscore Turkey’s position that the Zangazur Corridor is a critical element in achieving peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia, and that its opening is contingent on the successful resolution of the peace agreement.
