Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan extended congratulations to newly elected Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian following his recent electoral victory, as reported by Türkiye’s Communications Directorate on Monday. In a phone call, the two leaders celebrated Pezeshkian’s win and discussed the future of bilateral relations and key regional and global issues.
Erdogan expressed optimism about the future of Ankara-Tehran relations, emphasizing the historical ties between the two nations. “I am confident that our relationship will continue to flourish in this new era, building on our shared history and mutual interests,” Erdogan stated, according to the directorate’s release on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
During the conversation, Erdogan conveyed his best wishes to Pezeshkian for a successful term in office. Pezeshkian, a reformist candidate and former Health Minister, secured the presidency with 53.7% of the vote in the July 5 run-off election, marking a significant political shift in Iran.
Pezeshkian’s election comes in the wake of a national tragedy—the fatal helicopter crash in East Azerbaijan province on May 19, which claimed the lives of then-President Ebrahim Raisi and his Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian. This incident necessitated the expedited election that ultimately led to Pezeshkian’s victory, making him the ninth president of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The dialogue between Erdogan and Pezeshkian underscores the ongoing importance of diplomatic engagement in addressing regional stability and cooperation. Both leaders affirmed their commitment to working together to enhance economic, political, and cultural ties between Turkey and Iran.
