Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov met with Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad Ahmed Attaf in New York, Report informs, citing the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.

At the meeting, it was emphasized that great importance is attached to the development of ties between the two countries, based on common history, religion and cultural roots, and the prospects for the development of bilateral relations in political, economic and humanitarian spheres, the importance of expanding inter-parliamentary relations, the significance of regular political consultations between the ministries of foreign affairs.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov congratulated his colleague on the election of Algeria as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2024-2025 and noted the importance of strengthening cooperation within international organizations.

Jeyhun Bayramov informed the Algerian minister in detail about the current situation in the South Caucasus, the tension that has arisen as a result of military provocations by the illegal regime created by Armenia in the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan, as well as the goals and results of local anti-terrorist measures.

The minister noted that as a result of the measures taken by Azerbaijan, work is being carried out to disarm illegal Armenian armed groups that posed a threat to peace and security in the region. The head of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry emphasized that no harm was caused to civilians during the local anti-terrorist measures, and that all necessary measures were taken in advance to ensure their safety.

Jeyhun Bayramov added that all rights, freedoms and security of the Armenian population of Azerbaijan living in Karabakh will be ensured under the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan and within the framework of the international mechanisms for the protection of human rights supported by Baku.

Ahmed Attaf was also informed about Azerbaijan’s vision and approach to establishing sustainable peace in the South Caucasus region and the practical steps taken in this direction, as well as the normalization agenda with Armenia and the process of reintegration of the Armenian residents of Karabakh.

At the meeting, views were exchanged on new areas of cooperation and other topics of mutual interest.
