The participants of the Baku Climate Conference COP29 face the task of paving the way for implementing historic commitments, Brazil’s Vice President Geraldo Alckmin said at the COP29 leaders’ summit, Report informs.
“Today in Baku, we continue the diplomatic efforts that began in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro with the signing of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Each step is progress toward achieving common environmental goals,” he said.
Alckmin emphasized that the new collective quantitative goal must be ambitious to make the 1.5-degree target achievable.
“In Baku, we face the task of completing negotiations on the carbon market and paving the way for implementing the commitments made at COP28 last year in Dubai,” he said.
He added that Brazil is a recognized leader in food security and realizes that there can be no future without sustainable development.
“Brazil has set a goal to reduce emissions by 67% by 2035 compared to 2005 levels. Certainly, this is a very ambitious goal, but it is achievable,” the politician emphasized.
Alckmin noted that COP29’s success is key to the success of COP30, which Brazil will host next year.
