Abbas Abbasov, the Executive Director of the Baku Initiative Group (BIG), invited the French government to abandon baseless accusations and cooperate.
“The Congress of the International Decolonization Front, founded in Azerbaijan, was held in Kanaky (New Caledonia) on January 23-24, 2025. French officials call the decolonization process of colonies France’s internal affairs and in this regard, accuse the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) of interfering in France’s internal affairs. BIG strongly rejects and condemns these claims,” Abbasov said in a statement to Report.
According to him, the waving of the Azerbaijani flag in Kanaky is a gesture of gratitude from the Kanak people to Azerbaijan and its leader.
“Fundamental human rights, as well as people’s desire to be free, cannot be considered an internal affair of a country, and officials in France, which calls itself the cradle of democracy, understand this well. There is no place for colonialism in the 21st century, and this right must be urgently recognized for these territories in relation to the peoples who are the true owners of the islands. Regardless of where they are, freedoms are universal values and must be respected by everyone,” stated the BIG executive director.
Abbasov emphasized that BIG, as an international NGO fighting against colonialism, has declared the decolonization process as its main target in accordance with its mandate and operates legally in this direction: “Independence is the right of colonies. This can also be considered as the restoration of historical justice.”
He called on international organizations and the public to support BIG in this regard.
