The Baku Initiative Group (BIG) has addressed official letters to the United Nations Secretary-General, the Chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the President of the European Commission, the Secretary General of the Arab League, and the Chairperson of the African Union, based on the outcomes of the international conference titled “Illegal French Occupation of Mayotte Island of Comoros Union” held in Baku on September 3, 2024.
According to Report, the letters express deep concern over the illegal occupation of Mayotte Island, which belongs to the Comoros Islands, by France, noting that this constitutes a violation of international law.
The letters point out that France, abusing its status of a permanent member of the UN Security Council, blocks initiatives aimed at resolving this breach of international law.
Moreover, France disregards relevant resolutions adopted by international organizations such as the UN General Assembly, the Non-Aligned Movement, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Arab League, and the African Union.
The Final Declaration, one of the main outcomes of the international conference, has been submitted to the heads of the aforementioned organizations. In addition, a brochure titled “Illegal French Occupation of Mayotte Island of Comoros Union,” published by the Baku Initiative Group, has also been presented to these leaders.
The Baku Initiative Group has also called on these bodies to hold international conferences on the occupation of Mayotte Island and to promote the establishment of relevant working groups within their organizations to stop the occupation and protect international law.
