Three cargo aircraft carrying components of Russian S-400 missile defense systems arrived in the Turkish capital Ankara on Friday, said Turkey’s national defense minister, according to Anadolu Agency.
“Three planes were planned for today. As planned, all the aircraft arrived and all activities planned for today have been completed. This process will continue in the coming days,” Hulusi Akar told reporters.
Stressing the threats facing Turkey, Akar pointed to the country’s longstanding efforts to acquire long-range air and missile defense systems.
“There are some principles that we have set in this regard. In line with these principles, we have had negotiations with China, Russia, the U.S., and France. These negotiations showed us that Russia is the most compatible country,” Akar said.
Telling how the contract to purchase the S-400s from Russia was signed in April 2017, Akar said three aircraft had carried components of the systems to Murted Air Base in Ankara.
“The training of our personnel for installing and operating [the Russian S-400s] has been ongoing in both Turkey and Russia,” said Akar, adding that the process would continue in the coming days.
Possible procurement of U.S. Patriot missiles is also being evaluated by Turkish officials and institutions, Akar said.
The 2017 contract with Russia followed lengthy efforts to purchase an air defense system from the U.S. with no success.
In recent months U.S. officials have urged Turkey to buy U.S. Patriot missiles, arguing the Russian system would be incompatible with NATO systems and expose U.S. F-35 fighter jets to possible Russian subterfuge.
Turkey, however, emphasized the S-400 would not be integrated into NATO systems and would not pose a threat to the alliance.
Turkey has urged formation of a commission to clarify any technical issues, but the U.S. has failed to respond to this proposal.
The U.S. has also threatened sanctions over the S-400 purchase, with Turkey responding that any sanctions would be met in kind.

The new gigantic star-shaped Beijing Daxing International Airport, due to open by September 30 (2019) will have its domestic and international departure halls stacked vertically. Report informs citing the TASS.
This is the first such design among global airports, and will offer passengers more convenient and faster check-in and transfer services, its designer said on Tuesday.
Given the terminal’s centralized design, the distance between the central area and the farthest boarding gate will be 600 meters of walking distance at the maximum, much less than many other Asian and European terminals, and the speed of baggage reclaim will be faster, said French firm ADP Ingenierie, the architectural designer of terminal 1 of Daxing airport.
Located 60 kilometers south of Beijing’s city center, the new low-carbon airport is expected to serve as China’s largest integrated transportation hub and one of the largest worldwide. More than 50 domestic and foreign carriers have shown interest in operating flights from there.
Building of the infrastructure of the new airport has been completed. Terminal 1 will have an annual capacity of 45 million passengers at its opening, which will be able to meet the transportation demand of the upcoming 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games.
“The new airport requires a lot of compact aircraft parking stands and gates, and as such required us to break with the traditions of designing modular terminals that spread horizontally,” said Jean-Charles Content, lead architect of Asia-Pacific of ADPI.
“So we designed a compact single terminal, and it didn’t require rapid transit trains for now. Later, when the passenger flow will be expanded to 72 million annually, a rapid transit system is required, and the space has been reserved,” he said.

MEPs previously announced they would elect the head of the assembly on 3 July despite the fact that the European Council hasn’t been able to agree upon who should fill the bloc’s top spots.
The new European Parliament has convened to elect a new president to replace incumbent Antonio Tajani after a pan-European vote in May.
The list of the candidates includes Ska Keller (the European Free Alliance, Germany), Sira Rego (the European United Left/Nordic Green Left, Spain), David-Maria Sassoli (Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, Italy), and Jan Zahradil (Alliance of Conservatives and Reformists in Europe, the Czech Republic).
Justin Trudeau is regarded as one of the most likeable leaders in global politics right now but he found himself in no man’s land on Saturday morning at the G20.
Thanks to an awkward seating arrangement at the summit in Osaka, Japan, the Canadian prime minister found himself wedged between the Chinese president Xi Jinping and the president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, two politicians whose policies he otherwise opposes.
If that wasn’t bad enough, Trudeau tried his best to ignore the fact he was sitting beside Xi, with tensions between their two respective nations on rocky ground right now.
On the other side of Trudeau was Bolsonaro, who the Canadian did try to interact with only for the controversial right-wing Brazilian to completely blank his attempts at a handshake.
This completely backfired for the 47-year-old as Bolsonaro not only looks at him right in the face but then turns around and dismisses his offer of a handshake, leaving Trudeau looking completely bemused.
The moment has since been shared widely on Twitter and we have to say that it really isn’t the best look for Trudeau.
Needless to say, people found it pretty funny that Trudeau had no friends at the event, which is just cruel when you think about it.
The meeting between the President of Russia and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, on the sidelines of the G20 summit lasted 80 minutes, according to TASS.
Earlier, it was suggested that the conversation will take up between 60 and 90 minutes.
Opening the meeting, both leaders noted that the meeting can become a great opportunity to talk about many issues that piled up and needed to be discussed. Donald Trump proposed discussing trade ad disarmament issues. “It is a great honor to be with President Putin. His representatives, my representatives have many things to discuss, including trade and including some disarmament, little protectionism, perhaps,” he said.
“I cannot but agree with the [US] President, we have something to talk about,” Putin noted. “All the topics were set out, we have not seen each other in a while, since the Helsinki meeting (in July 2018). It is true that our administrations worked and gave us a great opportunity to continue what we were agreeing on in Helsinki,” Putin underlined.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that his face-to-face meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Osaka would be a good opportunity to continue dialogue between the leaders following their summit in Helsinki last year.
“We have things to discuss,” Putin said in brief comments to reporters ahead of the meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was seen trembling once again during a ceremony in Berlin on Thursday, eight days after a similar incident, according to BBC News.
Video showed Mrs Merkel, 64, gripping her arms as her body was shaking on Thursday. After about two minutes, she looked steadier and shook hands with the new justice minister.
She was offered a glass of water, but did not drink it.
Mrs Merkel had blamed the previous incident on dehydration.
Her spokesman said she would set off for Japan as planned at lunchtime.
“All is going ahead as planned. The federal chancellor is fine,” spokesman Steffen Seibert said.
German news agency DPA said that despite the spell of very hot weather it was cool during the ceremony in Bellevue Castle, where President Frank-Walter Steinmeier was presenting Justice Minister Christine Lambrecht.
Last time, Mrs Merkel trembled while standing next to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky in the sunshine. She said she had felt revived after drinking some water.
Madonna’s music video for “God Control” has already sparked a strong reaction, with visuals depicting a mass shooting inside of a nightclub.
The video opens with a warning that states: “The story you are about to see is very disturbing. It shows graphic scenes of gun violence. But it’s happening every day. And it has to stop.”
Scenes then show club-goers lying dead on the dancefloor and across the bar after a gunman opens fire.
“God Control” features on Madonna’s new album, Madame X, which was released earlier this month.
Patience Carter, who witnessed and survived the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida where 49 people were killed and 53 others injured, told TMZ that the eight-minute video reminded her of the horrific event.
“As a survivor of gun violence it was really hard to watch. Madonna’s caused upset with her new ‘God Control’ music video,” she said.
“I get that she was trying to bring awareness to gun control but I don’t think that was the right way to go about doing it. For someone like me who actually saw these images, lived through these images, to see them again, dramatised for views, I feel it was really insensitive.”
She added: “It was grossly accurate to what I witnessed that night.”
Lyrics on “Gun Control” include: “Get the kids ready, take them to school/ Everybody knows they don’t have a chance/ To get a decent job, to have a normal life. ‘When they talk reforms, it makes me laugh/ They pretend to help, it makes me laugh/ I think I understand why people get a gun.”
“I made this video because I want to draw attention to a crisis that needs to be addressed,” Madonna explained in an interview with People. “‘To me, this is the biggest problem in America right now… I cannot take it anymore.”
