On July 31, 2024, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov received Bik Lum, Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Azerbaijan.

According to Report, during the meeting, the parties exchanged views on issues arising from cooperation with UNHCR and the current situation in the region.

Minister Bayramov emphasized the importance of joint projects implemented with UNHCR to address the humanitarian consequences of the former Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict and improve the living conditions of Azerbaijani citizens who became refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) as a result of Armenia’s aggression against Azerbaijan.

The minister highlighted that the Great Return program, aimed at ensuring the dignified return of Azerbaijani citizens to the liberated territories, is one of the main priorities for the country. He provided information about the ongoing work in this area.

Minister Bayramov also informed the UNHCR representative about the preparations for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and discussed opportunities for cooperation within the framework of COP29.

The UNHCR representative noted that numerous projects have been implemented for Azerbaijani IDPs over the past 30 years. He expressed readiness to support the return of IDPs to their homelands and raise awareness in the field of humanitarian demining in cooperation with ANAMA.
