This is not the first case of airspace closure over Grozny, but tragedy was avoided then thanks to timely notification and the aircraft’s return to Baku, Airbus A320 captain and AZAL Airlines Flight Safety Management Director Rinat Huseynov said on the “Shall We Talk?” podcast speaking about AZAL plane crash which occurred on December 25, Report informs.
“There was a case when the airspace over Grozny was closed. After takeoff, we received information about this, and that time it came on time. The aircraft returned to Baku, as required in such circumstances,” Huseynov said.
During the interview, they discussed the reasons why the aircraft that crashed near Aktau could not return to the departure airport, and why an emergency water landing or reaching the runway proved impossible.
Huseynov also noted that the preliminary crash report from Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Transport has already been submitted, but the final investigation results are still pending. AZAL’s internal investigation is also ongoing to identify all details of the tragedy.
“The key fact that has been established is that the aircraft was subjected to external impact,” said Huseynov, responding to a question about the most important finding in the Kazakhstan Ministry of Transport’s report.
The captain described the condition of the crashed aircraft, the specifics of oxygen cylinder operations on board, as well as the crew’s actions, which were deemed professional and will become a subject of study in global aviation practice.
“We will wait for the final response and recommendations that will be made both for the entire international community and for our operators operating within the legislation of the Republic of Azerbaijan,” he added.
AZAL passenger aircraft operating the Baku-Grozny flight crashed on December 25, 2024, near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan. Of the 67 people on board the aircraft, 38 died and 29 survived.

Azerbaijan is of great importance to the US, including for ensuring Europe’s energy security. Azerbaijan-US relations under President Donald Trump will gradually improve, Fuad Huseynaliyev, director of Report News Agency, said in the Chronicle of Western Azerbaijan project release.
He commented on Trump’s main theses, as well as his position and further plans regarding the situation in the South Caucasus.
“I think that, in principle, Trump is interested in the situation in the South Caucasus. We have already seen how President Ilham Aliyev held talks with him after his election, even before the inauguration. So I think that relations between Azerbaijan and the US will slowly improve,” noted the agency director.
Speaking about the crisis in Azerbaijan-US relations that developed under former President Joe Biden, Huseynaliyev emphasized the bias of his administration towards the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict.
“When we see that a mediator clearly supports one side, and supports it not objectively, we don’t need such a mediator. Moreover, as you know, in April 2024, an agreement was concluded between Armenia, the EU, and the US on further arming Armenia and so on. That is, the Americans were involved in this process too. Media also reported that American weapons are now being delivered to Armenia. All these factors that the Biden administration promoted effectively nullified their position in Azerbaijan. Trump is much more pragmatic in this regard. He bases his decisions primarily on US interests,” he emphasized.
According to the agency director, Azerbaijan plans to become one of the most significant players in the alternative energy market, which is also of great importance for both the US and Europe.
“Now we are actively promoting green energy in our country. Not only are we promoting it, but we also plan to export our green energy to Europe, creating prerequisites for improving the energy supply issue in this region. I think that Trump will eventually become very familiar with all these issues and radically change US policy in the region. He will approach relationships with regional countries within his pragmatism and mutually beneficial cooperation that will be interesting for both the US and Azerbaijan,” Huseynaliyev added.
ASCO’s (Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping) Handysize-type dry cargo vessel, Murovdag, has become the first Azerbaijani cargo ship to cross the Magellan Strait. This milestone marks a new chapter in the history of Azerbaijani maritime navigation, Report informs, citing the company.
Departing from the Port of Tocopilla in Chile with 33,000 tons of potassium nitrate on board, the Handysize-type vessel navigated along the southern coast of Latin America and passed through the Magellan Strait—one of the world’s most challenging and strategically significant maritime routes. The vessel is currently sailing toward the Atlantic Ocean, with plans to unload its cargo at the Port of Cadiz, Spain.
The Magellan Strait is located in southern South America, within Chilean territorial waters, and serves as a crucial maritime passage connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The strait is known for its strong winds, unpredictable weather conditions, and complex water currents.
Murovdag is the second Handysize-type vessel with unrestricted navigation capabilities that ASCO has put into operation in international waters. This historic passage strengthens Azerbaijan’s position in the maritime sector and expands its participation in global cargo transportation.
Azerbaijan’s State Security Service (SSS) and Ministry of Internal Affairs have successfully thwarted a terrorist plot, dismantling a group tied to radical religious extremists with links to international terrorist organizations.
Their coordinated operational and investigative actions uncovered the activities of a group based in the Gusar district.
The individuals involved — Kamran Kerimkhanov, Umud Gulaliyev, Valerik Adilov, Riyad Safaraliyev, Rovshan Lachinov, Nazim Zakiyev, and others — had conspired with Gadir Hajiyev, a convicted member of the notorious “Forest Brothers” terrorist group, to plan acts of terror within the district.
The individuals involved in the plot set up hidden shelters in the forested areas of Khil, Djibir, and Yasab villages within the Gusar district to carry out their plans. They stored weapons, ammunition, explosives, and technical devices in these locations. A member of the group, Alipasha Kamilov, was located for questioning. However, when special forces arrived at his hideout in Gusar town, Kamilov resisted arrest by throwing two RGO-78 hand grenades. The attack wounded one of the officers. Following the ensuing special operation, Kamilov was neutralized.
During operational-search and investigative measures in the forested area near the village of Jibir, Azerbaijan’s law enforcement discovered a series of underground hideouts used by members of an illegal armed group. This group, consisting of Gadir Hajiyev, Riyad Safaraliyev, Valerik Adilov, and Umud Gulaliyev, had been hiding in the area to evade authorities. When discovered, the group members resisted arrest by deploying explosive devices and engaging in armed combat, ultimately resulting in their deaths during the operation.
Upon inspecting the hideouts, authorities recovered a significant stash of materials, including peat, acetone, detonators, remote-controlled explosive devices, as well as lead and rebar parts used to manufacture explosives. Additionally, law enforcement seized two Kalashnikov assault rifles, three hunting rifles, cartridges, and bullets. A flag symbolizing an internationally recognized terrorist organization was also found, underscoring the group’s ideological affiliation.
As investigators continued their operations, they uncovered additional members of the terrorist group. Nazim Zakiyev, another member of the group, was located on a farm near the village of Khil. Kamran Karimkhanov and Rovshan Lachinov were discovered hiding within the territory of the village itself. These individuals attempted to flee and resisted arrest by law enforcement, leading to their neutralization during the operation.
The investigation further revealed crucial details about the group’s organizational structure, their criminal activities, and their plans. Etibar Ahmadov, a key figure in the group, had illegally obtained dangerous materials such as ammonium nitrate, peat with highly combustible properties, detonators, and fire-wire cord. Using these materials, Ahmadov created explosive devices at a guest house, the “Motel” in Gusar, and even hid explosives on the roof of a nearby car wash. During the manufacturing process, one of these devices detonated, injuring Ahmadov in the explosion.
In addition, investigators found reasonable grounds to suspect that Sharafeddin Mahmudov, Etibar Ahmadov, and others were deeply involved in supplying explosives and other critical materials to the terrorist group, thereby facilitating their operations.
The Azerbaijani authorities have now charged several members of this criminal network, including Etibar Ahmadov, Rahim Mirzabekov, David Rashidov, Sharafeddin Mahmudov, Abugul Babayev, and Elchin Alirzayev. They are facing serious charges under articles 28,214.2.1, 28,214.2.3, 28,214.2.3, 28,214.2. 6 (preparation for terrorism motivated by religious enmity, religious radicalism and religious fanaticism with the use of firearms and objects used as weapons, in the form of a criminal association (criminal organisation) and other articles of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan). These individuals have been taken into custody, and a preventive measure of detention has been imposed on them by court order.
The investigation into this terrorist network remains ongoing, with both operational and investigative measures continuing as authorities track down any remaining individuals involved in the criminal organization.
