Japan scraps mascot supporting Fukushima wastewater dump – VIDEO

The Japanese government has been forced to quickly retire an animated character it had hoped would win support for its decision this week to release more than 1m tonnes of contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the sea.

Although the water will be treated before being discharged, it will still contain tritium, a radioactive hydrogen isotope represented on a government website by a cute fish-like creature with rosy cheeks.

The character’s appearance in an online flyer and video on the reconstruction agency’s website angered Fukushima residents.

“It seems the government’s desire to release the water into the sea takes priority over everything,” Katsuo Watanabe, an 82-year-old Fukushima fisher, told the Kyodo news agency. “The gap between the gravity of the problems we face and the levity of the character is huge.”

Riken Komatsu, a local writer, tweeted: “If the government thinks it can get the general public to understand just by creating a cute character, it is making a mockery of risk communication.”

Social media users named the character Tritium-kun – or Little Mr Tritium – an apparent reference to Pluto-kun, who appeared in the mid-1990s to soften the image of plutonium on behalf of Japan’s nuclear industry.

The reconstruction agency, which oversees recovery efforts in the region destroyed by the March 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear meltdown, removed the promotional material on Wednesday, a day after it first appeared.

Experts say tritium is harmful to humans only in large doses, and that with dilution the treated water poses no scientifically detectable risk.

The character was created to explain that the release of tritium into the sea is standard practice at nuclear power plants around the world.

Local fishing communities say the water’s release will destroy a decade of hard work to rebuild consumer confidence in their seafood.

Work to release the diluted water will begin in about two years, the government has said, and the process is expected to take decades.

“Nuclear power plants are highly specialised and difficult to understand,” an agency official told Kyodo, adding that the tritium mascot would be redesigned to take into account public sentiment.

Japan’s decision to discharge the water also angered neighbouring countries. South Korea said it was considering taking the issue to the international tribunal for the law of the sea, possibly to seek an injunction, according to a spokesperson for the president, Moon Jae-in.

The Chinese foreign ministry said releasing the water would set a bad precedent for the disposal of wastewater. “The ocean is not Japan’s rubbish bin, the Pacific Ocean is not Japan’s sewers,” said Zhao Lijian, a foreign ministry spokesperson.

Zhao invited Japan’s deputy prime minister, Taro Aso, to drink some of the treated water, after Aso said it was harmless enough to consume. “A Japanese official said it is OK if we drink this water, so then please drink it,” Zhao said.

Armenians commit provocation before fight of Azerbaijani athlete  – VIDEO

Share Whatsapp Telegram Twitter Facebook A+ A-

Armenians have committed a provocation before the fight of Azerbaijani MMA fighter Nariman Abbasov at AMC Fight Nights 100 in Moscow, coach Shahriyar Abbasov told Report.

According to him, Armenians confused organizers by releasing lie information to prevent the fight: “An Armenian fighter was defeated by a Georgian fighter. The event had to be held on April 10, but it was postponed. As it was the 100th tournament, the hall was full. Armenians wanted to prevent Nariman’s fight. Because it was the main battle of the tournament and they knew that he would win.”

Abbasov said he discussed the issue with the President of AMC Fight Nights tournament: “The event was held in April with no provocation.”

Note that in the third round, Nariman Abbasov has knocked out his rival Russian Shamil Amirov.

Bryza: Aghdam looks like Warsaw in 1945 – VIDEO

Azerbaijan 12/04/2021 18:00
Share Whatsapp Telegram Twitter Facebook A+ A-

“Now I’m in the center of Aghdam. It looks like Warsaw in 1945. Nothing left. The Armenian side so cruelly not only destroyed the city but took everything. 30,000 people lived in this part of the city. Nothing’s left of their lives except for some rubble. Gives a sense of what real cruelty and hatred can do,” said former US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Matthew Bryza, who is in the Aghdam district as part of a trip of a group of international experts with ADA University, Report informs.

Bryza has captured on video the destruction of Aghdam and its sights.

“This, of course, is the beautiful famous mosque, the Juma Mosque. Here in Aghdam it is really the only building that sort of survived intact. All these years, and for me it is a symbol of resilience and of hope of return to restoration of normal lives here in Aghdam. Since Nov. 9-10, the conflict’s resolution agreement is in place. It’s been very emotional, it’s an amazing sight to see this very Azerbaijani soldier coming out of the mosque. A very powerful visit that helps bring to life so much that has been lost here in Aghdam,” he said.

Together with a group of international analysts, he also visited the palace of the Karabakh khans in Aghdam, where he saw the extent of destruction of this historical object.

“This was the graveyard, there’s a monument to the Karabakh khan’s daughter, all destroyed and tombs were used during the occupation period as cow shreds,” Bryza said.

“And as I finish my visit to Aghdam I look down the road toward Khojaly, toward Khankendi with hope for resurrection of normality here,” he added.

“During the trip to these lands, we once again understood and felt what a great victory was won in Karabakh. We felt it from the bottom of our hearts. May Allah rest the souls of all our brothers who became martyrs during the war, and we wish the wounded a long life. We are grateful to them for this victory,” Turkey’s Presidential Communications Director Fahrettin Altun said told reporters during his visit to Azerbaijan’s Aghdam, liberated last fall from Armenian occupation, Report informs.

“This victory is a great triumph for Azerbaijan, the region, and Turkey. The 30-year occupation was decisively ended. Indeed, the occupation is over and the region is liberated thanks to the resolute position of Mr. President Ilham Aliyev. Under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey supported this just struggle,” Fahrettin Altun said.

“On the other hand, we have seen oppression, suffering, and barbarism here. This is an exceptional barbarism. We have also seen how hypocritical the world and international organizations are when these barbaric acts were committed here. Look, there is no voice from the organizations responsible for the protection of cultural monuments around the world. They played Three Monkeys. Therefore, the cultural monuments here were ruined. In fact, these monuments were destroyed to completely erase traces of Turkism and Islam. But they did not succeed, and they will not succeed. Because these lands are the lands of Turks and Islam,” he added.

“I am calling on UNESCO to see that our cultural monuments and history in other liberated territories of Azerbaijan, including Aghdam, have been destroyed. This should not be ignored. UNESCO must already set aside double standards and see the true face of the Armenians who are vandalizing this cultural treasure,” he concluded.
