Founded in Kyiv in 1943, during the Second World War, when part of Ukraine remained under the control of German fascists, this military museum was considered the first museum in the former USSR that exhibited war trophies obtained from the Germans in the liberated areas.
Report’s Eastern Bureau has prepared a photo essay from the museum complex, now called the National History Museum of Ukraine, which features World War II. It displays artifacts from the Donbas war waged for sovereignty in eastern Ukraine.
While the number of such military museums about the Second World War increased in many parts of the world, the mentioned museum in Kyiv differed in originality and its historical path. It hosted the first large-scale exhibition in 1946 with the participation of the world media. Although the museum expanded the area and exhibits after the war, in 1954, the USSR leadership closed it for some time. However, in 1974 the museum opened its doors to the public again, offering a broader presentation. Initially known as a military museum, the site was so popular that the Soviet leadership built a memorial complex near it in the Pechersk district of Kyiv and named it a state-museum complex. The first opening in this status took place in 1981. The purpose of the museum-memorial complex is to demonstrate to the new generation the consequences of World War II, fascism, and its defeat by heroic Soviet nations. The museum complex is considered the largest complex in the former USSR, with the total number of its exhibits standing at around 400,000.
During Ukraine’s independence – in 1996, by order of the President of Ukraine, the museum complex was given the status of a center for national wealth and scientific research. In 2015, the Ukrainian leadership changed the museum’s name to the “The National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War. Memorial Complex.”

Experience of Azerbaijan’s trade unions in the agricultural sector is important for Ukraine, Grygorii Osovyi, president of the Federation of Trade Unions of Ukraine (FPU), said in an interview with Report’s Eastern Europe Bureau.
“The previous system of management in the agricultural sector was based on state and collective farm-cooperative property. Then the trade unions felt confident. After the proclamation of independence and the denationalization of this property, the agricultural sector became predominantly private property, so it is necessary to establish cooperation with a private investor and an owner. It is necessary to build relations with numerous companies that are involved in the agro-industrial complex. It is also important that we, in Ukraine, are implementing a land reform. A corresponding law has been adopted. This will change the activities of companies in the agricultural sector – a land market will appear, and land owners will change through new conditions in this market. This is not the case in Azerbaijan,” Osovyi said.
He noted that Ukraine will face a difficult period – how to go through this transformation and not lose the influence of trade unions in the context of land reform.
“A rather sharp political struggle is taking place, in particular, in the Ukrainian parliament, where some of the deputies categorically reject the land reform due to the prospect of acquiring it into property by foreign owners. This creates instability for those who live in the countryside, because the owners can resell land plots. As far as I know, there is no such thing in Azerbaijan. Therefore, experience of the trade unions of Azerbaijan, as well as of other states where similar processes have already taken place, is important for us,” he added.
Since January 18 this year, the vaccination process has been successfully carried out in Azerbaijan. 90 percent of the target groups among medical workers have already been vaccinated. On May 10, all citizens of Azerbaijan who have reached the age of 18 can join the vaccination process, First Deputy Minister of Health, Acting Minister of Health Teymur Musayev said at a briefing, Report informs.

“I call on every citizen to join the vaccination campaign,” Musayev added.
